AND   JAMAICA.   FROM   1861   UNTIL   1867   THIS   SERVICE   WAS   PROVIDED   BY   THE   BROOKLYN   CENTRAL
AND   JAMAICA   RAILROAD
,   A   REORGANIZATION   OF   THE   BROOKLYN   AND   JAMAICA   RAILROAD.





THE   BROOKLYN   CENTRAL   AND   JAMAICA   OWNED   THREE   LOCOMOTIVES

THE   W.B. HUNTER   WAS   BUILT   BY   DANFORTH   COOK   &   COMPANY   IN   1860.
IT   BECAME   THE   LONG   ISLAND'S   NUMBER   40,   "HUNTINGTON".
HOWARD   HOUSE   WAS   THE     WESTERN   TERMINAL   OF   THE   B.C.& J.R.R.





IN   DECEMBER   1861   THE   LONG   ISLAND   FARMER   AND   QUEENS   COUNTY   ADVERTISER   WROTE:


THE   JACOB   FROST   WAS   BUILT   BY   DANFORTH   COOK   &   COMPANY   IN   1861.
IT   BECAME   THE   LONG   ISLAND'S   NUMBER   39,   "RIVERHEAD".
IN   1885   IT   WAS   REBUILT   INTO   THIS   TANK   ENGINE.






IN MAY 1861 THE LONG ISLAND FARMER AND QUEENS COUNTY ADVERTISER WROTE



THE   B. C. & J. R. R.   TERMINATED   AT   ROCKAWAY   ROAD   (TURNPIKE).   PEOPLE   HAD
TO   WALK   TO   THE   L. I. R. R.   DEPOT.   THE   NEW   YORK   DAILY   TIMES   WROTE:

IN   FEBRUARY   1862   THE   B. C. & J.   WAS   RUNNING   "LOCAL"   TRAINS   BETWEEN   EAST   NEW   YORK   AND   JAMAICA.


IN   THE   LATE   1850'S   THE   L. I. R. R.   RAN   "LOCAL   TRAINS"   BETWEEN   EAST   NEW   YORK   AND   JAMAICA.

IN 1866 THE COMPANY WAS AGAIN REORGANIZED AS THE   BROOKLYN   AND   JAMAICA   RAILWAY


AND LEASED TO THE LONG ISLAND FROM JAMAICA TO CLASSON AVENUE.



WILLIAM   L.  JARVIS,   WHO WENT TO WORK FOR THE L.I.R.R. IN 1875,   RELATED THAT THE ATLANTIC DIVISION TERMINATED AT THE HOWARD HOUSE,   ONE CREW DID ALL THE PASSENGER AND FREIGHT WORK,   AND WENT TO FAR ROCKAWAY AT NIGHT.     FREIGHT CARS AND TWO MILK CARS WERE HAULED BY SIX HORSES BETWEEN EAST NEW YORK AND FRANKLIN AVENUE FREIGHT STATION.

AND CLASSON AVENUE HORSES PULLED THE FREIGHT CARS.
THE FREIGHT STATION WAS KNOWN AS "FRANKLIN AVENUE".
